CrossMark Policy

NanoNEXT is committed to maintaining the accuracy, integrity, and transparency of the scholarly record. Where implemented for eligible content, the journal uses Crossmark to help readers identify the current status of a published article and to access important publication record information. Crossmark is a service provided by Crossref.

Purpose of Crossmark

Crossmark is a Crossref service that allows readers to check whether they are viewing the most current version of a publication. By clicking the Crossmark logo on a participating article, readers can view the publication status and, where available, related record information such as corrections, retractions, updates, and selected publication metadata. Additional implementation guidance is available from Crossref’s Crossmark documentation and Crossmark policy page guidance.

What Readers Can Expect

For articles registered with Crossmark, the Crossmark record may indicate whether the article is:

  • Current
  • Corrected
  • Retracted
  • Updated in another relevant way

The record may also include publication information such as:

  • Publication dates
  • Funding information
  • ORCID iDs, where available
  • Licence information, including Creative Commons licences where applicable
  • Crossref metadata deposited by the journal

Types of Post-Publication Updates

NanoNEXT may issue the following post-publication notices where appropriate:

Correction
A correction is issued when an article contains an error introduced by the authors or the journal that affects accuracy, indexing, or clarity but does not invalidate the overall findings.

Expression of Concern
An expression of concern may be issued when serious concerns have been raised about a publication but the available evidence is incomplete or an investigation is still in progress.

Retraction
A retraction is issued when the findings or content of a publication are shown to be unreliable, seriously flawed, plagiarised, duplicated without proper disclosure, unethical, fabricated, falsified, or otherwise unsuitable for the scholarly record.

Removal
Removal will be considered only in exceptional circumstances, including legal restrictions, defamation, court order, major privacy violations, or other situations in which the content cannot remain publicly accessible.

These actions are informed by recognised publication ethics guidance, including the COPE Retraction Guidelines and related COPE guidance.

How Updates Are Handled

When a post-publication change is necessary, NanoNEXT will publish a formal notice and link it clearly to the original article. The journal will update the article metadata as appropriate and, where Crossmark is implemented, will register the update through Crossref so that readers can see the current publication status. Crossref explains that participating publishers commit to maintaining the content they publish and alerting readers when changes occur.

Version of Record

NanoNEXT considers the published article to be the version of record unless a formal correction, retraction, removal, or other update is issued. Minor typographical or formatting adjustments that do not affect meaning may be corrected as part of routine maintenance without requiring a formal notice. Where applicable, the current status of the article can be verified through the Crossmark record associated with the article DOI.

Author Responsibilities

Authors must notify the journal promptly if they discover a significant error or inaccuracy in their published work. Authors are expected to cooperate fully with the journal in evaluating and correcting the publication record where necessary. Authors are also encouraged to provide accurate author-identification metadata, including ORCID iDs, where available.

Editorial Responsibility

The editor is responsible for assessing the need for post-publication action and may consult reviewers, editorial board members, institutions, or other experts as appropriate. Decisions are guided by publication ethics principles, the available evidence, and the need to protect the integrity of the scholarly record. NanoNEXT may also refer to relevant COPE guidance when evaluating post-publication concerns.

Crossmark Availability

Crossmark applies only to content for which the journal has registered Crossmark metadata. Readers should therefore rely on the Crossmark status shown on the article itself, together with any linked notices published by the journal. For more information, readers may consult the official Crossmark service page and Crossref’s update policy page guidance.

For NanoNEXT articles published under an open licence, the applicable terms should be stated clearly on the article page, for example under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International licence, where relevant.
